Campbell road crews out patching holes, but paving projects on hold

CAMPBELL

Now that the weather is getting warmer, streets are getting pock-marked with potholes.

In Campbell, crews have been out for the last two weeks patching the holes, said city administrator Jack Dill.

“Normally, we try to get all the main drags first: Sixth, 12th, Struthers-Liberty and Coitsville,” he said.

Those roads, however, have been paved recently enough so that they aren’t too much of a problem, he pointed out.

Even though patching is going on, the money for paving projects is not readily available, he said.

He said that Buel and Eastern avenues are the only two streets that will be paved this year.

Mayor William VanSuch said he will seek a list of streets that need paving from council members.

One trouble spot that has prompted complaints and discussions at council caucus meetings is an area on U.S. Route 422 before Struthers-Liberty Road.

That area is riddled with ruts and is often ice-covered. A block of ice was jutting out from the side into the road before the most-recent melt. Dill said the problem is caused by people draining downspouts and sump pumps out onto the road. He said the water should be channeled into the storm sewers.

He said the city has talked to the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office about the problem and believes it has found the right person to talk to at the Ohio Department of Transportation.

“We won’t go through another winter like that,” Dill said.
