East Carolina sweeps YSU baseball team

The East Carolina baseball team scored all of its runs in the middle three innings and took advantage of four Youngstown State errors to post a 10-0 victory Sunday.

East Carolina (3-0) swept a three-game series with the Penguins (0-3) over the weekend.

YSU’s Jeremy Banks had two hits while Padraic Williams and Drew Dosch combined for three scoreless innings of relief at the end of the game.

Williams, a sophomore making his second career trip to the mound, struck out three and did not allow a hit in two innings.

Dosch and Williams also both singled for the Penguins, who finished with five hits.

YSU tennis team defeats St. Francis

Boardman

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 6-1 at the Boardman Tennis Center.

YSU won five singles matches and won the doubles point against the Red Flash.

It was the first dual win for first-year coach Mark Klysner.

In singles, Tariq Ismail won by default over Elahn Pogque and Rob Emig dispatched of Kirby Medes 6-0, 6-0 to put YSU in front.

Max Schmerin won a two setter 7-5, 7-6 (5) over Andres Rosa while Rodrigo Campos defeated Youlian Natchev 7-5, 6-2.

Fitch does well at Kent State Open

Fitch senior Ali Tolich finished first in the weight throw (52 feet, 2 inches) and second in the shot put (42-0) to lead the Falcons at the Kent State Open.

Jen Shiley was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.95 and the 4x200 relay of Theresa Scott, Jen Shiley, Kaity Shiley and Jenna Yacovone was third in 1:47.97.

For the boys, Jay Jakovina won the high jump (6-8) and Waylan Andrews was first in the 400 (50.12).

Tamgho breaks jump indoor world record

AUBIERE, France

Teddy Tamgho has broken his own indoor triple jump world record, leaping 58 feet, 91/4 inches at the French indoor championships to better the mark by one centimeter.

The 21-year-old Frenchman had set his previous mark at the world indoor championships in Doha, Qatar.

Tamgho says “I’m not in excellent shape but I still beat the world record.”

Tamgho is preparing for the European indoor championships next month in Paris.

He is coached by former long jump Olympic champion Ivan Pedroso of Cuba.

Jockey Coa improving

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.

A spokesman says racing jockey Eibar Coa’s condition improving after undergoing surgery for a neck injury he suffered in a fall from his horse.

Coa’s agent, Tito Fuentes, said in a press release Sunday that the jockey has some movement in his arms and shoulders after Saturday’s surgery.

Coa, who fractured his C-4 vertebrae, has feeling throughout his body but cannot move his legs.

Coa is scheduled to have surgery again either Monday or Tuesday at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla.

Coa moved to the U.S. in 1993 and reached his 4,000th racing victory last year.

Martin wins race, Contador is fourth

PORTIMAO, Portugal

Tony Martin of Germany won the Tour of the Algarve with a strong sprint in the final stage Sunday to deny Alberto Contador his third straight title at the race, the Spaniard’s first competition since escaping a doping ban.

Martin won the 10-mile time trial in 20 minutes, 53 seconds to claim the title with an overall time of 18 hours, 48 minutes, 45 seconds.

Contador placed 15th in the final stage and finished fourth overall, 41 seconds behind Martin.

Contador tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol at last year’s Tour.
