Cousin: Slain ICE agent talked about being a hero

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A relative of a U.S. federal agent killed in Mexico says his cousin talked about being a hero shortly before his death.

Mourners gathered today to pay respects to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent Jaime Zapata. The 32-year-old lay in an open casket draped by an American flag during a visitation inside the Brownsville Events Center.

Zapata was killed last week when U.S. officials say cartel gunmen ambushed his car in San Luis Potosi state.

Rafael Munoz says Zapata told his mother he was going to be famous. Munoz said his cousin was a hero who stood up for his country.

Munoz said the family is still seeking answers and remains under heavy protection.

Funeral services for Zapata are Tuesday. A rosary was scheduled for tonight.
