Seven youth wrestlers qualify for state tourney


Seven members of the Canfield Youth Wrestling Club fought their way into the top four spots at the Feb. 5 district meet to earn a trip to the Ohio Youth wrestling Association state tournament.

Three of the them won district championships.

Fourth-grader Nathan Whitehead (86 pounds) beat Austintown’s Dakota Miglets 9-4 in the district finals. Fifth-grader David Crawford (90) defeated teammate Daniel Kapalko 9-2 in the title bout. Both will go to the state meet in Akron. Sixth-grader Georgio Poullas (105) had three pins on his way to a title, including one in the finals over Laken Jameson of Austintown.

Also placing second was fourth-grader Christian Wayt (56), who lost a tough 2-0 match to league rival Logan Ours of Wellsville.

Finishing fourth was fifth-grader Andy Garr (73), who lost both his district matches to Kevon Freeman of Beachwood. Sixth-grader Braxton Madison (100) lost in the last couple seconds to Shaker Heights’ Keith Best and earned fourth place.

All will compete at the state tournament.
