Phantoms Squirt team sweeps three weekend games

The Youngstown Phantoms Squirt hockey team won all three games last weekend, defeating the Amateur Penguins (6-5), Erie Lions (11-8) and Westmoreland (3-2).

At the Ice Zone, Devin Whitaker scored the third of his goals with 2:38 left in the game to spark the victory over the Penguins. The Phantoms rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the contest, but the Pens tied things up at 5-all in the third period.

Leading the Squirts’ offense were Whitaker (three goals) and Michael Fetsko (Boardman), Joey D’Apolito (Canfield) and Maguire Franko (Poland) with one goal each. Nick Beck (Boardman) was the goaltender of record for Youngstown.

On Feb. 12, the Squirts hosted Erie at the Covelli Centre in a high-scoring affair. A total of 18 goals were scored in the contest.

Leading the scoring for Youngstown was Whitaker with three goals. Fetsko and Beck had two goals each. With one goal apiece were D’Apolito, Vince Hepola (Canfield), Franko and Bo Gray (Boardman).

In goal for the Phantoms was Lane Kilne (Pulaski).

The Phantoms moved into fourth place and increased their PAHL record to 8-4-1 with a 3-2 victory over Westmoreland on Feb. 13.

Whitaker recorded his third hat trick of the weekend with a goal in the first period and two goals in the second period.

Leading 3-0, the Phantoms got into penalty trouble and Westmoreland score two third-period goals.

Having a solid defensive game for the Phantoms were Keith Smith (Austintown), Justin Lewis (Poland) and Danny Beistel (Canfield).

Beck (Boardman) faced 21 shots in goal.
