Parker Hannifin manager to speak at event for girls

Lori Ardeno Martinelli will be the keynote speaker at the 14th annual Women in Science and Engineering Career Workshop at Youngstown State University.

Martinelli is a technology development manager at Parker Hannifin Corporation, Cleveland. She received an associate degree in applied science of engineering and a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering technology from Kent State University.

She also received a master of science degree in manufacturing operations from Kettering University in Michigan.

Parker Hannifin Corporation is a global Fortune 300 company specializing in hydraulic components for machinery used to mine, farm and move the earth, to explore the oceans, outer space and in the development of clean, renewable energy.

At Parker Hannifin, Martinelli specializes in lean manufacturing, a production practice that focuses on the reduction of waste and the improvement of customer value.

Martinelli is responsible for new product development globally that includes industrial, mobile and marine markets.

She has also managed projects to develop energy-recovery wind turbines, used in the development of green-energy sources.

Martinelli will discuss her work at Parker Hannifin and her role as a member of the advisory council for the Oh WOW! Children’s Center for Science and Technology opening soon in Youngstown.

The Women in Science and Engineering Career Day will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 5.

Panel discussions will be in the morning and hands-on activities and lab demonstrations will be in the afternoon in Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus.

The workshop is designed to expose young women in grades six through 12 to career opportunities in science and technology. Panel discussions will be by area women on many different careers. Hands-on activities and demonstrations will be on such topics as biology, chemistry, engineering, forensics and physical therapy.

The workshop is open to all middle- and high-school girls from Mahoning and Trumbull counties and western Pennsylvania.

Students will attend two workshops and two demonstrations of their choice. Parents can get college planning and financial-aid information and take campus tours while their daughters participate in the workshop.

Registration must be submitted by March 3. The workshop is free to all students.
