The school district will be accepting applications for open-enrollment students for the 2011-12 school year during March.

Applications may be picked up at the front desk of the administration offices, 8200 South St. SE, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Additional information on the open-enrollment process is on the school district website at www.howlandschools.com.

Placement availability at all grade levels will vary based on Howland student enrollment within each grade. Because of current enrollment, no applications will be accepted for fifth grade.

Community school taking applications

Youngstown Community School will be taking applications for the 2011-12 school year from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday.

All applications are subject to lottery per grade level. Children applying for kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30. This is not registration.

After notification of acceptance, registration will occur. Students already enrolled do not need to apply.

They will re-apply the week of March 7 and automatically remain on the roster for the 2011-12 school year.

St. Rose Church takes registration

St. Rose Church is accepting registration for kindergarten through eighth grade. A $50 registration fee is required. Call the school office at 330-545-1163 to secure registration material or to schedule a tour of the school.

The school is an Ohio Education Choice Scholarship (voucher) participating school. It offers busing from Girard and Liberty. Before and after-school care is available through Sunny Days Day Care and Pre-school in the school building.

St. Rose School will have kindergarten screening March 4. Call the school office for an appointment.

Litch scholarship

A $1,000 Deputy John “Sonny” Litch Memorial Scholarship will be available to students of Croatian or Hungarian heritage attending a Catholic high school or any university beginning in 2011.

Applications are available by contacting the scholarship committee at Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown 44510. Application deadline is March 15.

HBA scholarships

The Hermitage Business Association is accepting submissions for its annual $500 scholarship. Candidates must live in Hermitage, have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, plan on attending a post-secondary or continuing education program and have community volunteer experience beyond school requirements.

Students who wish to be considered must submit a letter to the Hermitage Business Association Scholarship Committee, 800 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage, Pa., 16148.

Letters should outline the candidate’s qualifications, including school activities and answer the question, “If you were given the opportunity to start a business in Hermitage, what would it be and why?”

Submissions must be received by March 30. All applicants will be notified of the winner by mail. The winner will receive the award at the annual HBA social in May.
