Judge Mark Belinky of Mahoning County Probate Court and president of the Youngstown Zionist District has announced the creation of an endowment at Youngstown State University in honor of Dr. Saul Friedman, who retired recently from the YSU history department.

The Dr. Saul Friedman Scholarship in Jewish Studies will reward qualified YSU students who are engaged in studies focusing on Israel, the Holocaust and Jewish history.

Friedman has been a towering figure in the Youngstown community as an educator, Holocaust scholar and supporter of Israeli and Jewish causes, the judge said.

His reputation and academic research have brought recognition to the community, and his legacy needs to be imparted to future generations of students at YSU, he added.

The Zionist district is asking for contributions to help establish an endowment that honors Friedman’s academic achievements and supports the continued study of Holocaust and Jewish history by future YSU students.

Donations may be sent to the Office of University Development, Youngstown State University, One University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555.
