Pittsburgh Zoo elephant shunned by herd, moving

PITTSBURGH

A 10-year-old male elephant at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is moving to Alabama because of peer pressure of sorts.

The female herd has begun to exclude Callee in a phenomenon that occurs naturally as male elephants mature.

Callee will be taken off display today to prepare to move to the Birmingham Zoo. There, he’ll live with other males.

Pittsburgh Zoo elephant manager Willie Thieson says he knew it was time for the move when even Callee’s mother began to push him away. Shunned male elephants form their own group and reunite with females only during breeding time.

Callee’s departure will leave the Pittsburgh Zoo with six elephants, plus three more at a rural conservation center in Somerset County.

Jury acquits Pa. man who uses wiry-hair defense

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.

A Philadelphia man’s wiry hair has helped him beat a robbery rap.

The evidence against Timothy Corbett included surveillance footage and an eyewitness account, but his defense was that his stiff hair didn’t match the tousled appearance of the man in the video. The Bucks County jury agreed Wednesday, finding him not guilty of charges including robbery and terroristic threats.

Defense attorney Louis Busico tugged on his client’s hair during closing arguments, telling the jury that if he couldn’t move it, there was no way Corbett was the man with the mussed locks in the video.

Corbett had been charged with robbing the Bensalem convenience store April 24.

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Rees says prosecutors believed the evidence was solid, but the jury found there was reasonable doubt.

Suspect in Pittsburgh throws rubber cement at police

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh police say a man threatened to toss a grenade before throwing a jar of rubber cement at a narcotics detective before the suspect was arrested after a short chase.

Twenty-year-old Shawn Dillard remained in the Allegheny County Jail on Thursday, a day after his arrest on charges including drug possession and resisting arrest.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that Dillard threatened to throw a grenade at the detective, who had just watched Dillard complete a suspected drug deal about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Instead, Dillard threw the glue jar from the moon roof of his car and sped away but crashed a short distance away.

Police say they found 15 individual dose- stamp bags of heroin, some marijuana and $200 in Dillard’s car.

Dillard faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
