Work begins on downtown Cleveland aquarium

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

CLEVELAND (AP) — Construction has been launched on an aquarium that Cleveland officials hope will make a splash in the city’s Flats entertainment district.

Mayor Frank Jackson said at a ceremonial groundbreaking on Monday that the project is one of several that will transform Cleveland into a world-class waterfront city.

Downtown also is getting a casino and a new convention and medical trade-show center.

Its backers estimate that the Greater Cleveland Aquarium will draw upwards of 400,000 visitors a year and pump at least $10 million into the Cleveland economy. It’s expected to open this fall within a current building.

WTAM radio reports the aquarium is expected to create 40 full-time jobs.
