Man, 84, survives desert ordeal over 5 days

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

PHOENIX (AP) — An 84-year-old man is telling a story of survival after being stranded five days in the Arizona high desert.

Henry Morello, of Arizona, says he got so thirsty he drank windshield wiper fluid and used his car’s floor mats to stay warm at night.

Morello told reporters Tuesday that after he left his favorite restaurant, he made a wrong turn and got stuck in a ditch and couldn’t move.

To pass the time, Morello says he prayed and read his car manual from cover to cover.

Hikers found Morello Saturday north of Phoenix near Interstate 17.

Doctors at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix say Morello will be kept a couple of more days to treat a kidney condition.
