More Ohio Turnpike travelers use E-ZPass

Friday, December 23, 2011

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Ohio Turnpike says greater numbers of motorists are breezing through the tolls with E-ZPass.

The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports that through the end of November, the electronic-toll system was used this year by 19 million drivers. That’s 42 percent of turnpike travelers, up from 37 percent in 2010.

Turnpike spokeswoman Lauren Hakos says there’s a convenience factor with E-Z Pass, which was introduced in Ohio in 2009. A vehicle doesn’t have to stop at the toll plaza. An E-ZPass transponder mounted on the windshield automatically deducts the toll from a user’s account, paid either from a credit card or through a link to a checking account.

The system has an additional plus: the tolls are lower with E-ZPass.
