CANFIELD

The district’s school board said goodbye to two of its own and hello to new employees during its final session of the year.

In their final regular meeting Wednesday as board members, Renee Gessner and Anthony Peluso, along with their colleagues, approved an interim principal for the middle school and hired several athletic head coaches.

Don Dailey will replace Ron Infante as interim principal of the fifth- and sixth-grade students at Canfield Village Middle School. He will earn $250 per day, not to exceed 90 days, effective Jan. 3.

Dailey has 38 years of experience as an educator and was superintendent at Boardman schools from 1968-2004, where he also served as a substitute elementary principal in 2009.

After Superintendent Dante Zambrini introduced the board to the new principal, he told them that Dailey had prior commitments in March, which would not allow him to handle his new duties during that month. Rich Archer, the district’s business manager, will fill in, Zambrini said.

The board also approved the hiring of several head coaches — Dean Conley for wrestling; Matt Koenig, baseball; Pat Pavlansky, track; and Ray Melewski, softball.

Conley and Koenig will earn $6,122 each for their roles as head coach, and Pavlansky and Melewski each will receive $5,102.

Peluso was emotional as he told each of his colleagues how much he enjoyed working with them. He then asked Zambrini to help him finish his statement.

Zambrini relayed from Peluso’s written statement that the board member was “honored to serve the district.”

Peluso and Gessner will be replaced by Lee Fry and Philip Bova in January.

The board voted to have its organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 11, and elected Brian Kessner to remain its president until that time.
