Michael J. Stewart, 30, of Windham, father of a 4-year-old boy who shot himself to death with an unsecured gun in his parents’ Newton Falls home, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Stewart also must serve two years’ probation, pay court costs, refrain from using alcohol or drugs, undergo random drug testing and perform 40 hours of community service.

Stewart pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide and endangering children.

Prosecutors said the boy shot himself in the bedroom of his family’s home in the East River Gardens area of Newton Falls on Aug. 4, 2010.

Amanda Stewart was in the living room at the time, and Michael Stewart was at work.

The gun was unsecured in a dresser drawer in the bedroom, authorities said.

Amanda Stewart was sentenced to five years’ probation last month after pleading guilty to felony involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor endangering children.
