School: Heart condition led to soccer death

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) — School officials say an undiagnosed heart condition led to the death of a high school soccer player who collapsed during practice in western Pennsylvania.

Beaver County Christian School principal Doug Carson says 15-year-old Sam Dickson’s parents told him their son died as the result of a congenital heart defect.

Dickson collapsed Monday morning while practicing with teammates at a park near Beaver Falls. He was transported to a hospital and died about 90 minutes later.

About 150 people attended a prayer service at the school on Monday night and counselors have been made available to students.
