Four Mile Run closed

AUSTINTOWN

Four Mile Run Road is closed this week to all but police and fire vehicles and ambulances between Lanterman and Mahoning-Trumbull County Line roads.

This section of Four Mile Run Road closed Monday for bridge and pavement repairs and will reopen Friday.

Other traffic is being detoured along Lanterman, North Meridian, and Salt Springs roads and Liberty Street, the Mahoning County engineer’s office has announced.

South Side shooting

Police are investigating a shooting on the city’s South Side. Police said a 20-year-old city man told officers he was with his girlfriend, and they picked up a friend and drove him to the 300 block of Lucius Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The man said his friend asked to pick up a man he claimed was a cousin on Lucius Avenue, according to reports.

The 20-year-old man then drove to a house in the 300 block of East Florida Avenue where his friend exited, and the friend’s cousin pulled a handgun and shot the driver in the right shoulder, demanding he open a center console, reports state. The man left with a wallet containing about $50, and the driver’s girlfriend drove him to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley in Boardman. The driver later was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was listed in stable condition, police said Monday.

Charges against teen

A 16-year-old city boy was charged with burglary, obstructing official business and possession of marijuana after leading police on a foot chase this weekend.

Officers on V-GRIP patrol were called to the area of Judson Avenue and Rush Boulevard for reports of gunfire about 4 p.m. Saturday. Police said they saw the 16-year-old run on Hilton Avenue and enter a house on the street. Police received consent to search the house from the occupant and found the teen in a bedroom wearing clothes that he purportedly stole from the residence, according to reports. The teen was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Hubbard sewer forum

A preliminary meeting to discuss options for city sewers is planned at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the city building, 220 W. Liberty St., for Hughes Avenue property owners. Water foreman Pat Camuso will be available to discuss options, responsibilities and costs of a sewer installation.

Crossroads Church, 554 S. Meridian Road, is a host site for the Angel Food Program. Boxes range in size from $17 to $55 and include meat, vegetables and fruit. There are no income restrictions or guidelines. Preorder and prepay with cash, debit or credit cards, money orders or Ohio Direction Card.

Orders for August will be accepted from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. You may order online until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 21.

Pact for Salem chief

The Salem school board approved a new three-year contract for Superintendent Thomas Bratten, but with no increase in compensation. Accepting a new contract with a freeze to his salary and benefits, Bratten said, “We all need to do our part to keep the Salem schools healthy and moving forward.”

Board President Nicholas Bush explained the district is looking for ways to best address its financial goals while living within its means. “We know we cannot expect increases in state funding, at least for the foreseeable future. It is up to us, as a districtwide team, to deal with our financial challenges in a constructive and decisive manner.”

Leetonia road closing

Lisbon Canfield Road will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday between state Route 344 and Butcher road. The Salem Township Road Department will be replacing a culvert.

Hit-skip info sought

City police are still searching for more information about a weekend hit-skip accident. Police said a 14-year-old girl was hit by a car on Logan Avenue, near Lauderdale Avenue, at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses said they saw a white Cadillac fleeing the scene, reports state.

Shooting injury in Niles

A 50-year-old Franklin Avenue man suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest at 2:35 a.m. Monday that he said occurred while he was trying to load the weapon.

Russell L. Ritter was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for his injuries. The hospital said Monday it could not release any information on him.

When police arrived, they found Ritter on the living room couch and the weapon on the floor near the couch.

Ritter said he was trying to load the handgun when it went off.

Two women, age 24 and 34, said they were upstairs getting ready for bed when they heard the gunshot. The bullet that apparently hit Ritter was recovered from a couch cushion.

Tools stolen in Warren

A resident of the 1900 block of Stewart Drive Northwest reported Sunday that $16,000 worth of tools were taken from a detached garage at his home sometime within the past week.

Taken were two tool boxes containing tools valued at $2,500 each, miscellaneous tools worth $10,000 and a leaf blower/weed trimmer valued at $1,000.

Wallet stolen at YMCA

A 40-year-old Youngstown man already accused of burglarizing a 79-year-old woman is now facing other charges.

Police charged Robert R. Carfolo Jr. with felony theft and misuse of a credit card stemming from a July 22 incident at the D.D. and Velma Davis YMCA on McClurg Road. In that case, a 71-year-old man told police another man stole his wallet from his locker at the YMCA, reports state. Police said the man’s stolen credit card was then used at Country Fair gas station. Carfolo, who was already in Mahoning County jail for earlier charges, is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman this morning.

Teens face charges

Police charged three teen boys with burglary and attempted burglary over the weekend. Police said they received a call that three boys were trying to break into a home on Woodview Avenue about 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

Officers saw the teens when they arrived, and several witnesses identified the boys as those trying to enter the house, according to reports. Police said the three boys also confessed to a Friday night burglary on Aylesboro Avenue. The boys — ages 13, 14 and 17 — are from Boardman.

Teen flees JJC

A male juvenile broke free from the Juvenile Justice Center, 220 Main Ave. SW on Sunday, slightly injuring a female corrections officer. The juvenile is still at large, a spokesman at the center said Monday evening.

School dedication set

The school district will host a dedication and open house Saturday at the new kindergarten through 12th grade Brookfield Local Schools complex.

The event kicks off with a 2 p.m. cornerstone ceremony. About 3 p.m. school board members and Superintendent Tim Saxton will address attendees.

At 3:30 p.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned, and the building will be open for public viewing. A reception with light refreshments will be in the complex cafeteria.

McDonald’s damaged

Police have charged Ronald Alexander, 60, of Illinois Avenue, with criminal damaging.

According to reports, a police officer said he witnessed Alexander pick up a landscaping stone, throw it and break a window at McDonald’s Restaurant on Fifth Avenue at 10 a.m. Monday.

The officer arrested Alexander, who was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
