Culinary students advance

In its first year hosting the FCCLA Regional Culinary Competition, the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s Dustin Arkwright and Kenny Walter (Austintown), Zachary Book and Danielle Byall (West Branch), Julia Coburn (Sout Range), Jenna Hartman (Canfield) and Edwin Lewis (Sebring) all advanced to state level.

The MCCTC students received two bronze medals in baking and pastry and garde manger, one silver medal in baking and pastry and two gold medals in the team event.

During the day-long event, students from MCCTC, Maplewood Career Center and Auburn Career Center competed in a variety of culinary competitions, including baking and pastry, garde manger, culinary team and dining room.

During the culinary team event students had one hour and 15 minutes to prepare a three-course meal from a provided menu.

Students were not only judged on the execution of the dishes, but were also scored on their knife work and cuts during the preparation.
