Ohio university wants to cut coal as power source

Monday, April 18, 2011

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio university wants to eliminate coal as an on-campus power source in just over a dozen years.

The initiative is one of several environmental efforts being undertaken by Miami University as part of a new sustainability plan.

Other programs include making recycling more convenient, buying recyclable products more often and adopting more environmentally friendly construction techniques.

The university heats the campus in southwestern Ohio with a coal-fired steam plant but wants to fully displace coal as an on-campus energy source by 2025.

University president David Hodge tells the Hamilton JournalNews that Miami’s plan is something the school hopes will inspire everyone.
