Win over Detroit garners Horizon tournament bid

The YSU men’s tennis team defeated Detroit 5-2 on Sunday at the Boardman Tennis Center. The win propels into the Penguins into the Horizon League Tournament as one of the top six teams in the conference. The Penguins (6-12 overall and 2-5 in the Horizon League) needed a win over the Titans (6-14 and 1-6) to qualify for the league tournament which starts on Thursday in Indianapolis. YSU jumped out quickly earning the doubles point picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2, Felipe Rosa and Rodrigo Campos earned an 8-6 win over the Titans’ Chris Chueng and Cesar Cerrano. At No. 3, Zeeshan Ismail and Rob Emig beat David Stabley and Nick Tolomei 8-6 as well. In singles play, Tariq Ismail won at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Alex Latosinsky. Emig won 6-1, 6-2 over Stabley at No. 6 singles and Max Schmerin won 6-3, 7-6 over Pablo Nunez. Zeeshan Ismail bounced back strong after dropping the first set 6-0 by taking the next two 6-4 and 6-0 over Tolomei. YSU did not qualify for the 2010 Horizon League Championships, but has reached the event in the first year of Head Coach Mark Klysner. Earlier this year, YSU won its first regular-season Horizon League match since March 2005 against Valpo.

Late runs help Valparaiso earn doubleheader sweep

VALPARAISO, IND.

Valparaiso got a walk-off single in game one and scored three runs in the eighth in game two to sweep a doubleheader on Sunday at Emory G. Bauer Field. In game one’s 4-3 win, Kyle Gaedele’s game-winning two-run single came after YSU scored three times in the top of the ninth to go up 3-2. YSU tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the eighth before Valpo scored three runs in the bottom half en route to a 5-2 victory. The Penguins got quality starts from Phil Klein and Robert Switka but couldn’t make them stand up. Klein allowed two runs on seven hits while fanning seven in six innings. He left down 2-0, and Kevin McCulloh allowed two runs in the ninth after the Penguins rallied. Switka left with one out in the eighth and runners on first and second in a tie game. Blake Aquadro came in and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases, and Will Hagel broke the tie with a sacrifice fly. Robbie Robinson followed with a two-run double to right center to make the score 5-2. Switka was charged with four runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. YSU leadoff hitter David Leon had two hits in both contests, and his two-run single with two outs in the ninth gave the Penguins their 3-2 lead in game one. All three of the Penguins’ runs scored after there were two outs. Jeremy Banks and Neil Schroth also had two hits in both games.In game two, Valpo scored a run in both the second and third innings to go up 2-0. Armani Johnson’s single plated Phil Lipari in the fifth for YSU’s first run, and Schroth doubled in Dan Hurlimann in the eighth to tie the score. Switka allowed Gaedele to reach on a bunt single with one out in the eighth, and he walked Steven Scoby on four pitches before handing the ball off to Aquadro.

Penguins finish third at BG’s rain-shortened Invite

YSU’s women’s golf team finished third at the Bowling Green Invitational which was shortened to 18 holes after Sunday’s play was called off due to high winds making the Stone Ridge Golf Course unplayable. YSU senior Katie Rogner was poised to make a move on the field after carding the second-best round on Saturday. Rogner had a 76 and trailed Western Michigan’s Britney Hamilton by two shots. However, with round two not being played she will place second. Each golfer shot 38 on the front nine, while Hamilton’s 36 on the back nine proved to be the difference. As a team, the Penguins had a solid opening round with a 331. WMU won the team title with a 316 while Akron was second one stroke back. Junior Samantha Formeck tied for 11th after firing an opening round 82. Sarah Heimlich carded an 85, Angela Molaskey had an 88 and Sarah Scheidemantel was also part of the lineup.

Sadovnikova garners lone win in match with Detroit

Youngstown State sophomore women’s tennis player Margarita Sadovnikova won her 18th match of the season, but the Penguins dropped a 6-1 dual to Detroit on Sunday at the Boardman Tennis Center. Sadovnikova won her final match of the season 6-2, 6-1 over the Titans’ Amanda Cornwell at No. 1 singles. The Penguins dropped the five other singles matches in straight sets. In Horizon League action, the 2010 first-team All-League selection was 6-2 with losses to UIC and Milwaukee. She ended the season on a six-match winning streak and won eight of her last nine match after March 27. Detroit also won all three doubles matches and improves to 4-17 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League. The win qualified the Titans for the HL Championships. The Penguins finish the year 5-13 and 2-6 in the Horizon League.
