Nineteen students from Market Street Elementary are experiencing first grade with a new faculty member this year.

Boardman native Melissa Loew has been assigned as a first-grade teacher at the elementary. She has aspired to teach since she was in grade school and has always regarded education as a high priority in her life.

“As a child, I always played school with my neighbor and my sister,” she said. “I have a love for learning.”

Loew, who attended Robinwood Lane Elementary, graduated from Boardman High School in 1999. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education with a reading endorsement from Youngstown State University in 2005. She student taught at Boardman’s St. Charles school, working with the third-grade.

This is Loew’s first full-time faculty position, but she has been working at Market Street with their Title I program for the past four years.

“Everyone is great here. We really work together as a team,” she said.

Though a lot of patience is needed with young students, Lowe said watching them grow is a rewarding experience. She keeps her students thinking positively by challenging them to do their best and not allowing “I can’t” attitudes in the classroom.

“They need a lot of guidance and role models and I have always just been drawn to the younger kids,” Loew said.

Loew currently resides in Boardman with her husband, Dan, and 2-year-old daughter, Kayla Marie. She said she wants her students to love learning just as much as she did when she was younger.

“I feel that Boardman really set me up for success and I want the same thing for the future children of Boardman,” she said. “I love it here.”
