1854: The “Charge of the Light Brigade” takes place during the Crimean War as an English brigade of more than 600 men, facing hopeless odds, charge the Russian army and suffer heavy losses.

1910: “America the Beautiful,” with words by Katharine Lee Bates and music by Samuel A. Ward, is first published.

1918: The Canadian steamship Princess Sophia founders off the coast of Alaska; some 350 people perish.

1929: Former Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall is convicted in Washington, D.C., of accepting a $100,000 bribe from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny.

1957: Mob boss Albert Anastasia of “Murder Inc.” notoriety is shot to death in a barber shop inside the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York.

1971: The U.N. General Assembly votes to admit mainland China and expel Taiwan.

1983: A U.S.-led force invades Grenada at the order of President Ronald Reagan, who says the action is needed to protect U.S. citizens there.

1970: Movement toward a work week of four 9- or 10-hour days appears to be picking up steam in American industry, writes Vindicator business editor George R. Reiss.

Helen Raschak has been named administrator of Park Vista, the Ohio Presbyterian Homes new $5 million facility at 1216 Fifth Avenue.

1960: A proposed amendment to Youngstown’s smoke control ordinance would give Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. and other steel producers a five-year grace period during which they would develop satisfactory control methods for the new oxygen-fired open hearths.

U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan hosts Youngstown area attorneys who were admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States after ceremonies at the court.

1935: Dr. E.E. Kirkwood says passage of a $100,000 bond issue for an addition to the present Tuberculosis Hospital could save Mahoning County much more than the cost of the improvements by helping stop the spread of the disease.

Col. Leslie S. Baker, federal manager of financial relations, comes to Youngstown to conduct a clinic on insured mortgages, which are expected to spur home building and modernization work.
