McDonald boys, girls win meets to advance

The Mooney and McDonald High boys cross country teams and the McDonald girls team won Saturday’s district meets at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds to advance to next Saturday’s regional at Boardman.

In Division II, the Mooney boys won with 77 points, three ahead of Jefferson Area.

The Cardinals’ top runners were Nevin Lesnoski in fourth and Kyle Okular in ninth. The top four teams and top 16 finishers advance.

Qualifying as individuals were Lakeview’s Nick Tripi and Eric Harris, and Girard’s Ryan Delbene.

In Div. III, McDonald won with 44 points, followed by Maplewood with 73. South Range was fourth with 96 points.

McDonald’s Patrick Kunkel (16:16.77) won the race, followed by South Range’s Ryan Roush and Tim Nichols. McDonald’s Nick Rees, Jerry Dugan, Jeff Kunkel and Bobby Johnson were top 15 finishers.

Maplewood’s top finishers were Wyatt Hartman (6th), Dallas Bright (9th) and Morgan Hake (10th).

In Div. III girls, McDonald scored 49 points, 13 better than second-place Maplewood. South Range, Badger and Lowellville also qualified as teams.

Maplewood’s Alanna Shamrock won the race in 19:48.39, finishing ahead of McDonald’s Sarah Jones and Maplewood’s Krystal Williams.

Boys

CANTON

In Div. I, three Boardman runners qualified for the regional meet. Mark Hadley, Eddie Adu-Poku and Alan Burns had Top 20 finishes at Malone College.

The top four teams advanced to the regional as well as Top 20 individuals not on the qualifying teams.

Louisville won the meet with 43 points, followed by North Canton Hoover with 62, Massillon Jackson with 117 and Massillon Perry with 119.

Boardman finished sixth with 138 points. Austintown Fitch was eighth with 246 and Howland was 10th with 271.

Hadley (5:26.1) was 10th, Adu-Poku (5:30.7) was 14th and Burns (5:34.5) was 19th.

In Div. II, West Branch finished fourth to advance. The Warriors’ top runners were Drake Lohnes (5th), Dekota Toot, Zach Altman and Zach Daniels.

In Div. III, Lisbon’s Matt McGuire (5:43.3) and Southern’s Jared Sevek (5:45.1) finished 12th and 14th to qualify as individuals.

Girls

CANTON

Boardman’s Katie Heney (6:22.8) and Fitch’s Carissa Jenkins (6:30.2) finished 16th and 20th at Malone to qualify as individuals.

In Div. II, Salem finished second with 57 points and had four runners in the Top 13: Betsy Yuhaniak (4th, 6:37.1), Mallory Maher (6th, 6:40.2), Allison Moore (10th, 6:51.2) and Gabrielle Shivers (13th, 7:03.1).

West Branch’s Andrea Wingett (7:09.1) was 16th.

In Div. III, Columbiana placed third and Lisbon sixth to qualify as teams.

Columbiana’s top runners were Ashley Lydic (16th) and Caroline Kimpel (18th). Lisbon’s Carmen Phillip was seventh.

Also qualifying were United’s Allison Parks and Leetonia’s Abbie Kopscak.

BAZETTA

In Div. II at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds, Poland was second and Girard fourth to qualify for regional.

Poland’s McKinsie Klim was third (20:16.46).
