1867: The United States takes formal possession of Alaska from Russia.

1892: The first long-distance telephone line between New York and Chicago is officially opens (it could only handle one call at a time).

1910: The E.M. Forster novel “Howards End” is first published.

1931: Inventor Thomas Alva Edison dies in West Orange, N.J., at age 84.

1969: The federal government bans artificial sweeteners known as cyclamates because of evidence they caused cancer in laboratory rats.

1985: The Rev. Norman L. Wagner, pastor of Mount Calvary, details his plans to build a $50 million “City of God” that would include residential, commercial, nursing and counseling facilities on the site of Idora Park.

The seat held by Trumbull County Commissioner Thomas Battin, who has been hospitalized since a June traffic accident, could be declared vacant within two months under a proposal being prepared by the Trumbull County Democratic Party.

1970: Youngstown State University submits a six-year, $57 million capital improvements program to the Ohio Board of Regents calling for construction of a dozen new buildings and additions.

The Vindicator straw poll shows Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties will give John Gilligan, Democratic candidate for governor, a heavy majority in the Nov. 3 election.

1960: Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. executives expect moderately higher operating rates during the rest of 1960. The operating rate averaged 68.7 percent during the first nine months of the year, but was as low as 48 percent in the third quarter.

The Greater Youngstown AFL-CIO Council endorses renewal and additional tax levies on the ballot for several Mahoning County school districts.

The Mahoning County Welfare Department expects to have a deficit of perhaps $125,000 at the end of the year, but will be in better financial condition that it was at the close of 1959, says welfare director I.L. Feuer.

1935: The Ohio Board of Censors blocks the motion picture “Hands across the Table” starring Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray from opening at the Palace in Youngstown. “The Last Outpost” starring Cary Grant will play instead.

George Davis, 24, of Youngstown walks calmly to his death in Ohio’s electric chair. He was convicted of killing night watchman Thomas E. McLean with a pipe during a burglary at a Youngstown garage

Steel output at Mahoning and Shenango valley mills rises to 60 percent.
