East High School’s Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps completed a 90-hour community service project at the school, assembling more than 800 “shoe boxes” for Operation Christmas Child.

Operation Christmas Child is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers shoe boxes with presents, school supplies and more, all over the world.

The boxes go to children who otherwise would probably not receive a present. Boxes are shipped to some of the poorest neighborhoods across the world.

War-torn countries and areas that have been devastated by severe weather are normally targeted for delivery of these boxes.

The East students learned that it is better to give to those who are far worse off.

Once the boxes were constructed, ROTC students and staff transported them to a local church, The New Life Baptist Church, in New Wilmington, Pa.

They will be filled with many items that have been donated by the surrounding communities.

Once filled, the boxes will be loaded onto a truck and transported to a receiving and distributing center in Boone, N.C. From there, they will be flown to other countries and distributed.
