The Canfield High School speech and debate team earned second of 18 in team sweepstakes and third of 18 in IE power sweepstakes at the Austintown tournament on Saturday.

Another group from the team competed at a tournament in Copley and finished 25th out of 31 teams there.

At the Austintown tournament, Nathan Pacchia and Rosie Jo Neddy placed first in Duo and Tim Nesnidol took top honors in the Humor category to lead the Cardinals.

In the Team Sweepstakes competition, Canfield finished second with 75.75 points. Fitch (80) won the team title. Howland (73.5) was third, Boardman (71) finished fourth and Niles (66) rounded out the top five teams.

Canfield (44) was third in the IE Power Sweepstakes, behind winner Howland (80) and second-place Fitch (53). Cardinal Mooney (38) was fourth and Niles (36) was fifth.

Other top individuals for Canfield were Gary Zamary and Chloe Gebacz, second and third, respectively in Impromptu; fifth place; Vineet Rai, International Exempt; sixth place, Mary Wirtz, Original Oratory; and seventh place, Caroline Bennett, Oratorical Interpretation; Lauren Lewis, Original Oratory and Brandon Brooks, Prose and Poetry.

At the Copley tournament, Nicole Chahine placed third in Student Congress.

After a week off for Thanksgiving, the team will be back in action Dec. 3-4 for a tournament at Boardman.
