The 11th annual Jabali African Cultural Celebration will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

Jabali means “the rock” in Swahili. The event, sponsored by the YSU Africana Studies Program and co-sponsored by the Youngstown Chapter of the United Nations, will feature entertainment from the Harambee Youth Group and the African Students Union.

Wendy Webb, retiring superintendent of Youngstown schools, will give a keynote address on the topic “The Unsung Heroes of the Youngstown Public Schools.”

Dinner is $25 per person, $10 for students or $175 for a table of eight. For more information, call 330-941-3097.

Annual tree lighting

NORTH LIMA

Beaver Township’s annual tree lighting is slated for 3 p.m. Dec. 5 at Veterans Memorial Park.

The free event will include a performance by the South Range High School choir and a visit from Santa Claus. The park is located at the intersection of state Routes 164 and 165.

Child endangering

WARREN

Joseph F. Clark, 22, of Royal Mall Drive, Niles, has been indicted on one count of endangering children and one count of felonious assault. He will be arraigned Dec. 1 before Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Clark’s indictment says he recklessly abused a child less than 2 years old Oct. 13, resulting in serious physical harm. Prosecutors said the crimes were committed in Niles.

If convicted, Clark faces up to 18 years in prison.

‘I Need a Miracle’

YOUNGSTOWN

New Vision New Day Ministry will present an “I Need a Miracle” benefit concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at the church, 1970 Everett Ave.

Performing at the event will be Kymberli Y. Jenkins, Penny Eldridge-Harris and Sabrina Whitley-Robinson, recording artists, and Douglas Miller, Gospel Award nominee.

Families in need of a miracle are asked to write to the ministry explaining their circumstances, and they will become eligible for a chance to win a portion of the $1,000 in Wal-mart gift cards. Winners must attend the concert to receive the awards.

‘Koins for Kids’

Students from schools in the tri-county area are registering to participate in the second annual “Koins for Kids” campaign to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The fundraiser will take place from Tuesday through Dec. 10.

All the funds raised during the “Koins for Kids” campaign will stay in the Mahoning Valley to benefit local children and families. The schools raising the most funds in each county (based on a percentage raised versus school enrollment) will receive an ice-cream social and DJ for a school dance.

In addition to Handel’s, local sponsors include Farmer’s National Bank, WBBG-FM, 570 WKBN, WKBN-TV27 and Fox Youngstown.

Free holiday event

CORTLAND

As a way to thank the community for its support, Lake Vista Retirement Community, 303 N. Mecca St., is sponsoring a free holiday event beginning at 5 p.m. Dec. 7.

The evening will include an official tree lighting performed by Cortland Mayor Curt Moll and songs by Lakeview Girls Choir.

Those attending can take a horse-drawn carriage ride, visit with Santa and warm up with hot chocolate and cookies at Park Vista.
