Kent holds off Urbana; Howard scores 17 for Butler

CLEVELAND

Justin Greene scored 20 points, Carlton Guyton 15, and Justin Manns 14, to help Kent State beat upset-minded Urbana 94-71 on Tuesday night.

In the second half as Kent State shot 20 for 32 from the floor (62.5 percent) and outscored the Blue Knights 58-32, including 32-6 in the paint.

Robert Wilson scored a game-high 21 points for Urbana (1-4) and was the only Blue Knight in double figures.

Michael Porrini added 13 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (3-1).

Buffalo 81, Canisius 64

BUFFALO, N.Y.

Byron Mulkey scored a career-high 23 points to help Buffalo (3-1), which led 42-29 at halftime thanks to 16-of-25 shooting (64 percent) in the first half.

Elton Frazier led Canisius with 14 points, while Julius Coles added 12.

Butler 70, Siena 57

ALBANY, N.Y.

Matt Howard scored 17 points and added 12 rebounds to lift Butler past Siena.

Shawn Vanzant added 12 points for the Bulldogs (3-1) in a rematch of last year’s Bracketbusters matchup.

Ryan Rossiter had 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Saints (1-3), who lost at home for the second straight time after winning 38 consecutive home games.

Western Michigan 67, Milwaukee 55

MILWAUKEE

Flenard Whitfield scored 19 points and keyed a 10-0 second-half run to boost Western Michigan over Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Juwan Howard Jr. scored 13 and Demetrius Ward 12 for the Broncos (1-2).

Anthony Hill had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers (3-3).

Wright State 82, Oakland 79

FAIRBORN

Vaughn Duggins scored 23 points, including Wright State’s final six. Wright State shot a perfect 21 for 21 as a team from the foul line. With the Grizzlies (1-3) making just 8 of 14 (57.1 percent), it was the difference in a game which saw 12 lead changes and nine ties.

Troy Tabler and Cooper Land added 17 points each for the Raiders.

Wright State trailed 41-36 at halftime and shot 51.9 percent from the field in the second half (14 of 27) to outscore the Grizzlies 46-38.

Keith Benson led Oakland with 25 points. Reggie Hamilton added 15 and Larry Wright had 14 for the Raiders.

Ohio 78, Valparaiso 75

ATHENS, Ohio

DeVaughn Washington scored 14 points, leading a balanced Ohio attack that placed six players in double figures.

Though the game was played in the Buckeye State, it was part of the Las Vegas Invitational. The Bobcats head to Nevada to play national power and sixth-ranked Kansas on Friday.

D.J. Cooper had 13 points. Asown Sayles and Ivo Baltic had 11 points apiece, while Reggie Keely and Tommy Freeman had 10 points each.

Valparaiso (2-2) caught up with 2:16 to play. Brandon Wood’s layup tied it at 70.
