The city and Youngstown State University will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 on the Hazel Street extension project. The $1.2 million project provides a link between downtown and Youngstown State University’s Williamson College of Business Administration.

The ceremony will be on the extension between Wood Street and Rayen Avenue, adjacent to the business college.

Those expected to speak include Mayor Jay Williams and YSU President Cynthia Anderson.

Man pleads guilty

WARREN

Derrek C. Binion, 33, of Linda Drive Northwest, has pleaded guilty to robbing the PNC Bank, 2365 Parkman Road, on July 24. Binion entered the plea Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court before Judge Peter Kontos.

Binion will be sentenced after the Trumbull County Adult Probation Department conducts a pre-sentence investigation. He could get up to 10 years in prison.

Police said a man walked into the bank, told the teller to be very quiet and give him money while placing his hand on a gun in the waistband of his pants. He received $4,260. Binion wore no mask and was photographed by the bank’s security camera.

Lifesaving device

NEWTON FALLS

Newton Falls police believe an automated external defibrillator placed into service in a Newton Falls police cruiser a year ago may have helped save the life of a Bane Street man Monday morning.

A call to 911 at 7:08 a.m. sent a city ambulance and patrol cars to a home where a 60-year-old man was found on the floor. Officers Rick Lisum and David Garvey found the man not breathing and with no pulse, police said.

The AED machine recommended “shock,” so one was given, which revived the man, police said. A Newton Falls ambulance arrived moments later and took over the patient’s care. By the time the patient arrived at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, he was breathing on his own and in stable condition, police said.

The devices were purchased with money donated by the Newton Falls post of the American Legion.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day will be marked in the Mahoning Valley with a fund-raising dinner sponsored by the Trumbull County Area AIDS Task Force on Dec. 4.

The annual event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at McMenamy’s banquet center in Niles, will include dinner, fund-raising activities and a performance by “The Voice” Denise Russell, the only female illusionist to have performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Tickets are $20. Reservations are encouraged by Monday.

Man charged

SALEM

Salem police have charged a man for kicking out the side window of a city patrol car over the weekend. Police Chief Robert Floor said Andrew Lynn, 22, of East Sixth Street, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and vandalism. After he was charged with disorderly conduct, he refused to get into the police car. The vehicle is having a new window installed.
