Man, 39, shot to death outside New Castle bar

A New Castle man died in a weekend shooting, police report.
Edward Wooten, 39, was shot in the stomach outside the Players Lounge on South Mill Street at 2:25 a.m. Sunday.
Officers were nearby and heard the gunshot, police said.
Wooten was taken to Jameson Hospital, where he died a short time later. Police are continuing to investigate.
West Side shooting
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating a shooting on the city’s West Side.
According to police, four people were standing in front of a house in the 2500 block of Tyrell Street just after midnight Saturday. A former boyfriend of one of the people got out of a nearby car with friends. Reports say the former boyfriend chased the group, firing several shots before getting back into the car and fleeing.
No one was injured and the shooter has not been apprehended.
Honors for firefighters
WARREN
Seven firefighters who rescued three women and a Warren police officer from a fatal 2009 house fire on Bonnie Brae Avenue Northeast will be honored at 11 a.m. Friday at the Warren Fire Department.
Those to be honored are Capt. Jeffrey Younkins, Lt. Alfred Brown, Lt. Shawn Peura, Lt. Theodore Ray Jr. and firefighters Nick Radich, Marc Titus and Ed Dowell.
The firefighters will be given the Award for Heroism from the State Fire Marshal’s Office for their response to an April 28, 2009, house fire that consumed a group home for three women. Firefighters located the women and Officer Doug Hipple on the second floor and removed them. All four were badly injured, and Melissa S. Watson, 44, later died.
Donna Cassidy, 52, Sheree J. Egry, 52, and Hipple survived.
Hipple reached the fire before firefighters and entered the burning house to rescue the women, but he and the women were overcome by smoke.
Police chase in Warren

A 24-year-old Hamilton Street Southwest man pleaded innocent to misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business, driving under suspension and reckless operation Monday in Warren Municipal Court, accused of leading a police officer on a foot chase at 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
Officer David Weber attempted to make a traffic stop on Dreano A. Golden after Golden failed to stop at a stop sign at Hamilton Street and Nevada Avenue Southeast. But Golden pulled into a driveway on Hamilton and fled on foot, running north through yards and over fences until Weber lost him.
A resident on Union Street said he heard a noise near his garbage can, so Weber checked there and found Golden, who took off running again. Golden attempted to jump another fence but fell. Weber used his stun gun on Golden to bring him under control.
Flu shots downtown

Members of the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association, a local unit of the Ohio Nurses Association union, who work at Forum Health Northside Medical Center are offering free seasonal- flu immunizations, which includes H1N1 protection, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today or as long as the vaccine supply lasts at St. Vincent DePaul Society soup kitchen, 208 W. Front St., downtown.
3-vehicle Coitsville crash

No one was seriously hurt Sunday in a three-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 422 in Coitsville.
T he Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield post said a pickup truck driven by Julie Schultz of Transfer, Pa., hit a travel trailer that was being backed into a driveway by Richard Lisko of Lowellville. A car driven by Mihail Pikos of Campbell hit the wreckage, police reported.
Lisko wasn’t hurt. He was charged with operating a trailer with expired registration and with not wearing his seat belt.
Schultz was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. She was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, possession of drugs and assured clear distance.
