Halleck must give up one of 3 public jobs

Columbiana County Commissioner-elect Mike Halleck can’t be a tripple-dipper.
He can hold two public jobs but will have to give up the third public job.
Halleck, a Republican, defeated incumbent Democrat Dan Bing in the November election.
Halleck is a Perry Township trustee. He has said he intends to keep that job and the commissioner’s post.
Commissioner Jim Hoppel, a Republican, said that people can serve as a commissioner and in another public job.
County Prosecutor Robert Herron, a Democrat, said Thursday he had researched the law and determined that Halleck could hold the commissioner’s post and also serve as a trustee.
Halleck is also on the board of the Columbiana County Port Authority.
Adam Booth, director of the Columbiana Board of Elections, provided information from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office that lists the “Compatibility of Public Offices or Positions.”
The list states that a county commissioner can serve as township trustee as well as a member of the board for a port authority.
However, Tracy Drake, the chief executive officer for the port authority, said Thursday said under the authority’s rules, anyone who is elected to a public post must resign from the board by the end of the year.
Drake said that members of the board make about $5,600 a year.
According to the Columbiana County Auditor’s Office, a commissioner will make $65,620 a year.
Perry Township Fiscal Officer Susan Johnson could not be reached on the present pay for a trustee.
Halleck did not return calls seeking comment.
