SALEM

Elizabeth Thatcher loves to read — and to read to others.

The former teacher and former member of the Salem Board of Education reads to children whenever she can.

She is the director of the Salem Storytime Museum in a Victorian house at Fifth Street and North Lincoln Avenue that is designed to encourage children to read.

“It’s very appealing,” she said.

She said that about $150,000 is needed to finish renovations to the structure.

She said of the renovations, “[The cost] adds up very quickly.”

To raise funds, Bob and Linda Sebo of Salem, along with the museum, will have an art auction, the J. Robert Sebo Auction and Jazz Festival, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Kent State University’s Salem Campus.

The performers include the Jack Halkrides Quartet and John Reese & Back Beat.

Sebo has donated a number of pieces, including one valued at $2,000, Thatcher said.

Local artists will have their work on display along with prints by illustrators of children’s books. Six students from the Salem schools also will have their artwork on display and for purchase.

Hors d’ oeuvres and beverages will be provided by The Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton.

The cost is $15 per person. The deadline for tickets is today. Tickets are available by calling 330-332-4723. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
