Three city high school students join the school board, representing their classmates.

Omar Mujajed of Chaney, Keyona Woods of East and Aaron Hughes-Ware of Youngstown Early College, all seniors, each will serve a one-year term.

“They will be officially installed at the next board meeting next week,” said John Allen, school district ombudsman, at a board meeting Tuesday.

Student board members don’t have voting authority but give reports on events and activities at their school.

They were selected on the basis of grade-point averages, a written essay and interviews with a panel of school representatives.

Omar, a member of Chaney’s marching band, National Honor Society, Key Club and Science Club, would like to help improve the image of the school district.

Keyona, who is senior class president and a member of National Honor Society and the Spanish and Pep Clubs at East, thinks being appointed to the school board will give her the “venue to express the hopes and goals of her school.”

Aaron, vice president of his class, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, Yearbook committee member and Kappa League president at YEC, “would like the opportunity to represent his school as a voice for all of YEC’s students.”

The board also recognized members of the Southwest Cowboys football team and their coaches. The team, comprised of students from Volney Rogers and Woodrow Wilson middle schools, won this year’s city championship.
