1936: The Cunard liner RMS Queen Mary leaves England on its maiden voyage to New York.

1937: The newly completed Golden Gate Bridge connecting San Francisco and Marin County, Calif., is opened to pedestrian traffic (vehicular traffic begins crossing the bridge the next day).

1941:” The British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck off France, with a loss of more than 2,100 lives.

1964: Independent India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, dies.

2005: Speaking out for the first time in favor of controversial base closings, President George W. Bush tells the Naval Academy commencement the nation was wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary military facilities and needs the money for the war on terrorism.

1985: Mahoning County Commissioner Thomas J. Carney says Gov. Richard F. Celeste’s failure to address Mahoning County’s welfare cost burden could haunt him if he runs for re-election.

Jessie LeFlore thanks his lawyers, R. Scott Krichbaum and James Coyle, after being acquitted on charges he murdered David Wildes during a robbery of the Elm Street Beverage Shoppe. The jury deliberated for 18 hours.

1970: Wade Bellaman, regional sanitary engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Health, says the Shenango River is the most polluted stream in Northwestern Pennsylvania, but steps are being taken to clean it.

The Youngstown Transit Co. announces elimination of Sunday and holiday service and earlier quitting hours on weekdays. The last bus will leave Central Square at 9:15 p.m.

Youngstown receives a windfall in a $180,000 cut in Police and Firemen’s Disability Pension fund payments because of higher investment rates being paid on pension funds.

General Motors Corp. is erecting a new building at its Lordstown complex to assure the quality of Chevrolet’s new small car, the Vega 2300, Chevrolet Plant Manager Louis J. Biskach says.

1960: The annual Washington School PTA picnic at Mill Creek Park almost ends in tragedy when David Kopachy, 7, falls into Mill Creek near the old Slippery Rock Bridge. The boy was saved by an unidentified youth who pulled him from the water using a tree branch and administered artificial respiration until police arrive.

Youngstown morals squad officers raid a bookie joint and arrest a 44-year-old Hillman Street man on charges of possession of gambling slips and recording a wager. Municipal Judge Don L. Hanni fines the man $75, but gives him no jail time.

1935: A small scratch just below the knee suffered during a picnic develops into tetanus and claims the life of a nine-year-old Struthers girl, Jennie Droshenko.

Dr. W.H. Bunn, Youngstown heart specialist, tells the Kiwanis Club that worry and stress contribute to heart disease, the chief cause of death.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Youngstown Industrial Exhibit closes after more than 28,000 visitors go through the doors.
