Sign-up by Friday for free continuing education for social workers

Staff report

Community Legal Aid, an Akron-based nonprofit law firm serving the legal needs of low-income residents in Northeast Ohio, is hosting free continuing-education training for social workers in each of the eight counties the organization serves, including Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull.

The deadline to sign up for the trainings is 4 p.m. Friday. Nonsocial-worker staff of nonprofits and government agencies are welcome to attend as long as space allows.

The training — Legal Issues Facing Transitional Workers: Legal Education for Social Workers — has been approved for 6.5 CEU hours by the Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board.

This daylong training will inform social workers about legal issues specific to low-income populations, including the disabled and elderly, so that they may identify instances when it is appropriate to refer clients to Community Legal Aid or other legal assistance institutions.

The organization is offering this free training during the first two weeks of June for social workers in Columbiana, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, and Wayne counties.
