Friday, May 21, 2010

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (AP) — A suburban Philadelphia police officer has been shot in an early morning confrontation with a man allegedly smoking marijuana.

Upper Darby police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says the officer returned fire and wounded the suspect.

Chitwood says 31-year-old officer Ray Blohm saw the man walking with open container of alcohol and smoking marijuana around 12:30 a.m. Friday. Blohm ordered the man to stop.

Chitwood says when the man refused, Blohm tried to use his Taser. Chitwood says the suspect then pulled out a gun and shot Blohm four times; Blohm’s bulletproof vest stopped the fourth shot.

Chitwood says Blohm fired back, hitting the suspect four times. Blohm is hospitalized in stable condition. The suspect’s condition has not been disclosed.
