Neb. sheriff candidates draw cards to settle GOP nod

BRIDGEPORT, Neb.

The next likely sheriff of Nebraska’s Morrill County might want to try his luck in Vegas next.

Milo Cardenas’ nine of hearts Monday night beat Travis Petersen’s six of spades and handed Cardenas a Republican primary win.

The two men agreed to cut a deck of cards after Monday’s re-count confirmed that both finished with 379 votes after balloting ended last week. State law requires such electoral ties be settled by a game of chance.

Morrill County Clerk Kathy Brandt shuffled the deck seven times before the candidates drew cards.

No Democrat ran for sheriff, so Cardenas is almost certain to win the job in November’s election.

NJ college valedictorian proposes to boyfriend

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.

A New Jersey college valedictorian had a special graduation gift for her boyfriend — a wedding proposal, which he accepted.

Moments after finishing her speech Sunday at the Centenary College commencement, Emily Hawley called fellow graduate Josh Walker to the stage. She then popped the question, drawing loud roars from fellow graduates.

Hawley didn’t have a ring to give Walker and didn’t get down on one knee. She tells the Daily Record newspaper of Parsippany her proposal was “nontraditional enough.”

Walker admits being caught off guard but says he didn’t mind.

Hawley and Walker are Maine residents who have dated since they were sophomores in high school seven years ago. They haven’t set a wedding date.

Roaming bear traps NJ paramedics inside building

WAYNE, N.J.

Paramedics in New Jersey were slowed down responding to an emergency call by a bear that kept them trapped inside their building.

A nearby contractor getting something from his truck says he came face to face with a 200-pound bear but threw a carpenter’s folding ruler at it and scared it away.

Police Capt. Paul Ireland says the bear was gone by the time officers arrived Monday morning at the St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital ambulance building in Wayne, just west of New York City. He says an ambulance then was able to get out.

Officers temporarily stopped traffic while they scared away two bear cubs that were wandering near the hospital and William Paterson University. There’s been no sign of the cubs’ mother.
