YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Saxon Club honored Kay Donna Ring, who was chosen by the Ladies’ Society Branch 22 as its Lady of the Year, and Thomas W. Fizet Sr., who was chosen by the Men’s Lodge Branch 30 as its Man of the Year, on Saturday during an annual benefit goulash dinner at the club.

Also singled out for recognition were Darlene and Robert E. Nischwitz and Helen E. and James Mauch, who received Saxon Honor Pins presented by Thomas J. Manning, the organization’s national president. The Men’s Lodge Branch 30 also recognized those who have been members for 40, 50 and 60 years.

Ring, who was also chosen as “Mother of Year” in 2008, has served the branch on numerous committees for the past 10 years, has worked on the annual flea market and is a member of the Saxon Club Retirees. The former assistant manager of a Minnesota Fabrics store, she is actively involved in TOPS, the Red Hat Society and the Altar Guild of St. Edward Church. She and Tom, her husband of 56 years, have seven children, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Fizet has been a member of Branch 30 since 1977. He has served as corresponding secretary, chairman of the restoration committee, and president and treasurer of the men’s golf league. He and his wife, Dorothy, are members of the couples and winter bocce leagues. Last year the club’s national organization, the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons, presented him with a Saxon Honor pin.

A 55-year member of Carpenters Local 171, he is an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he serves on the property committee and belongs to the Men’s Study Group. The Fizets, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this fall, have three children, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Entertainment was by the Youngstown State University Men’s Chamber Chorus, and the Saxon Culture Group Brass Band provided music for dancing.
