Ohio State plans 8.5% tuition hike

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

COLUMBUS (AP) — The Ohio State University is preparing to raise in-state undergraduate tuition and fees by about 8.5 percent over the next two quarters, bringing the highest cost paid by residents to $9,420 per school year.

ACROSS THE STATE

The Ohio State University’s tuition and fees per year will rank fifth in the state among public selective enrollment universities after the increases take effect:

Miami University, Oxford: $12,743

University of Cincinnati: $10,065

Bowling Green State University: $9,541

Ohio University: $9,500

Ohio State, one of the nation’s largest universities, distributed a memo outlining details of the plan Tuesday. Trustees are scheduled to unveil the proposal at their March 30 meeting. A final vote is expected in May.

Four of Ohio’s six public colleges or universities with selective admission have already raised tuition since a statewide freeze was lifted effective in fall 2009.

With the hike, Ohio State will rank fifth-highest in the state in cost, behind Miami of Ohio, the University of Cincinnati, Bowling Green and Ohio University.

Senior vice president for business and finance Bill Shkurti said only 19 percent of Ohio State students pay full price; all others receive some kind of financial aid.

“This is sort of like the sticker price on a car,” he said.

Shkurti said the university saved students and their families $12 million by delaying the 3.5 percent increase allowed this school year from fall to summer 2010. Another 3.5 percent increase allowed next school year will be tacked on for fall quarter.

Making up the rest of the increase are increases in fees for access to the Ohio Union student enter, free use of the local transit system and other activities, he said.

Graduate students will also see tuition and fee increases, and out-of-state residents will pay a tuition surcharge of 1 percent this summer and 3.5 percent beginning in the fall.
