Local club promotes railroad history

The Western Reserve Modular Railroad Club will host shows at the Greater Youngstown Home and Garden Show at the Austintown Expo Center in the Austintown Plaza.

The purpose of the club is to promote the hobby of model railroading, railroad history and railroading in general.

Show dates and times are Friday from noon to 9 p.m., Mar. 27 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Mar. 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

YSU theater to perform an Irish classic

Youngstown State University Theater will present the comic drama The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh.

Performances are scheduled in Spotlight Theater Thursday through Mar. 28 and Apr. 1- 3.

Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Sunday matinee performance begins at 3 p.m.

Ticket prices are free for YSU students; $10 for adults; $5 for senior citizens, YSU faculty, high school and college students from other universities, Penguin Club members and YSU alumni.

There will be an opening night dinner buffet Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Bliss Hall Box Office Lobby.

A package price of $20 includes dinner and a ticket for the performance.

Learn how to spot severe weather and save lives

Mahoning County Skywarn will conduct training on how to recognize approaching storms and tornadoes Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Austintown Fitch High School auditorium.

The training session will be led by Gary Garnet, warning coordinator meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Cleveland and is free to attend.

Bring your family to celebrate the new arrivals at the MetroParks Farm Apr. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visit the newborn lambs, calves, chicks, kids, ducklings and more.

Cake and punch will be served while supplies last.

Prepare for kite festival

Design and build a “green” kite and then try it out Apr. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Judge Morley Pavilion in Mill Creek MetroPark.

Basic ideas and plenty of “trash” will be provided. The event is free, but participants must register by Apr. 16.

Program at health center teaches self-care

A Health at Home program is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mar. 31 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

This program teaches self-care and how to make decisions about your health, using Health at Home Æ, a book of step-by-step instructions for over 200 health problems.

All program participants receive a free book, plus instruction and practice on how to use the book.

Welcome spring and learn basic floral design

Deby Clark will discuss the basic design principles Apr. 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

The cost is $28 for garden members and $35 for nonmembers.

Preparation of spring flowers, greens and vases for will be donstratied and particpants will vase a bouquet of tulips, daffodils and irises.

MetroParks Farm will host a kite festival Apr. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Going Green,” so design and build a kite using materials usually thrown away and show it off in the sky.

The free event will feature professional kite-flying demonstrations, games and prizes.

Volunteers can learn to lead group tours through Fellows Riverside Garden Apr. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Enjoy an enchanted evening in the gardens

The Ballet Western Reserve and Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens are presenting an “Enchanted Evening” special evening of dance for children and their adult companions Apr. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Before the performance, children will learn basic dance steps and enjoy cupcakes and lemonade.

The cost for the evening is $10.

Eat pancakes in the park

The Boardman Rotary Club’s 27th annual Pancake Breakfast will be today, Sunday, Mar. 27 and Mar. 28 at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The cost is $6 and includes the traditional selection of pancakes, sausage and real maple syrup served by Boardman Rotary members and Boardman Interact Club members.

The event will take place during Boardman Park’s Maple Syrup Festival.

White House Fruit Farm is hosting its second annual apple dessert contest Mar. 27.

A panel of local celebrity judges will taste all desserts at 1 p.m. and select winners based on taste, appearance and creative use of apples in the recipe.

The first-place winner will receive $100 and free apples for a year (a peck of apples a month). The second-place winner will get a $50 gift certificate to the farm and a bushel of apples.

The third-place prize winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to the farm and a bushel of apples.

Participants must be 18 or older and need to submit an entry form and $5 by Monday. All proceeds will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Free program offers health screenings

Humility of Mary Health Partners and New Bethel Baptist Church are cosponsoring a two-part program aimed at getting people healthy.

The program begins with health screenings, a presentation on cancer and a light lunch from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. in Youngstown.

For part two of the program, participants are invited to Newport Library from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Apr. 9 to get test results and learn what their numbers mean.

St. Elizabeth recognized for excellence

St. Elizabeth Health Center has been designated as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement surgery by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

The Blue Distinction designation is awarded to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality health care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancer, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery and transplants.

Facilities must have established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive and emergency care, experience and training of surgeons, quality management programs, multi-disciplinary clinical pathways and teams to coordinate and streamline care and shared decision making and preoperative patient education.
