Western Pa. girl, 13, wins marble title in NJ

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh teen is one deadeye shot — at marbles.

Thirteen-year-old Penelope Bauer won the girls’ title Thursday at the 87th National Marbles Tournament in New Jersey.

Bauer won a $2,000 scholarship and, perhaps not least of all, matched her sister Alexandra’s tournament win in 2007.

Her coach, Dan LaGamba, says Allegheny County has produced 37 national champs since the tournament began. That’s more than any other region in the country.

Bauer beat 10-year-old Bailey Narr, also of Pittsburgh, in the finals. The pair attend school together and practice against each other.

Two boys from western Pennsylvania were eliminated in the semifinals.
