Western, Pa. man calls judge 'idiot' before being sentenced to life prison term

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh-area man called a judge an “idiot” as he was being sentenced to life plus 21 to 41 years in prison for leaving his 23-month-old daughter out in the snow to die.

Twenty-six-year-old William Page, of Braddock, lashed out at Judge David Cashman of Allegheny County Common Pleas Court during today’s sentencing. The life sentencing was a formality, because a jury rejected the death penalty in March after convicting Page of first-degree murder in his 23-month-old daughter’s death in 2007.

Page maintains his innocence and told Judge Cashman “I will fight until I’m free.” Judge Cashman told Page he “should have gotten the death penalty.”

Page responded, “Listen idiot, I didn’t kill anyone,” then told the judge to sentence him “so I can go.” Judge Cashman then called Page “despicable.”
