Car competition drives funds for Easter Seals

Friday, June 18, 2010

The parking lot of Austintown’s Quaker Steak and Lube was the site of a class car showdown.

The Northeastern Ohio Camaro Club and the Mahoning County Mustang Club teamed up for their third annual Mustang vs. Camaro Showdown June 5. The clubs alternate locations each year and choose different community charities to showcase for the event. This was the Mustang Club’s year to choose the event location and charity to sponsor.

The Mustang Club has raised more than $30,000 over the past five years. This year, the club chose to sponsor the Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties during the event.

Mustang Club Show Chairman Robert Macabobby said there is a need in the Valley to help all charities, but the Easter Seals stood out.

“We saw what the Easter Seals were doing with Hunter and wanted to help,” Macabobby said.

Representatives from the Easter Seals say the money will be used to finance their new Intense SuitAbility Program. Therapy through the program helped Girard’s Hunter Crites achieve his goal of walking independently at the Angels of Easter Seals Fashion Show.

Crites was the first child sponsored in the Intense SuitAbility Program. He chose his favorite car and awarded the owner with the “Hunter’s Pick” award.

“I’m happy I got to pick my favorite car,” Crites said. “I have my own award to hand out!”

The best Mustang and Camaro were chosen by event spectators.

Raffle tickets were sold for $1 and used in voting for the cars. DJ Big Rick provided background music as voters walked up and down the rows of classic and newer model cars.
