Canfield has reached new heights in being deemed one of the nation’s best institutions for music.

Canfield Local Schools were named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the U.S. by the National Association for Music Merchants.

This is the 11th year the foundation has acknowledged school districts for their support of music education.

Mary Luehrsen, the organization’s director of government relations and public affairs, believes the program not only acknowledges a school’s involvement in music, but helps families locate communities that make music a priority.

“Music education plays a vital role in student success in school and life,” Luehrsen said.

Recipients were determined through a nationwide Web-based survey. The survey measured the curricular involvement of music education and the support given from the community. Each school that received the honor scored within the top 80 percent.

Fourteen communities were chosen in the state of Ohio and 174 chosen nationwide. Canfield was the only community chosen from Mahoning County.

Music educators were presented with a certificate commemorating the achievement. The high school’s brass sextet performed at the beginning and end of the presentation ceremony. Speakers for the presentation included Superintendent Dante Zambrini, Mayor William Kay and Motter’s Music’s Bivianio.

Zambrini said he is proud of the students and teachers for receiving such a prestigious honor.

CHS Unit Principal Michael Moldovan said the community has always embraced the arts. It is a part of the school’s curriculum.

“We have a very well rounded program here with great academics, sports and music education,” he said. “Music is an integral part of education.”
