Early-season honors: Youngstown State senior wide receiver Dominique Barnes and offensive guard Eric Rodemoyer were named preseason first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference by Phil Steele’s college football preview. Barnes was honorable mention all-conference last fall after leading the league in touchdown receptions (eight). He started all 11 games for the Penguins last fall and caught 60 passes for 762 yards playing opposite first-team all-conference receiver Donald Jones. Rodemoyer, a Kennedy Catholic High graduate, was a second-team selection last year after starting nine games at left guard and one at left tackle. He was named the team’s offensive lineman of the year.

Tickets on sale soon: Individual game tickets for the home football slate go on sale Aug. 2 at the YSU athletic ticket office. Reserved seat tickets are $16 while general admission tickets are $12. During September, fans can purchase general admission tickets for $5 each. For details, call 330-941-1978. The Penguins open the season at Penn State on Sept. 4 before heading home for Butler, Central Connecticut State and Southern Illinois the following two weeks. Other home games include North Dakota State (Oct. 9), Northern Iowa (Oct. 30) and Indiana State (Nov. 13).

TV time: Youngstown State’s Oct. 16 game at Western Illinois game will be part of the league’s TV package. This is the 12th straight year the MVFC is coordinating an in-house television package. The games are produced for syndication on over-the-air and cable television stations throughout the Midwest. Each of the four conference-produced games will air live or taped on FS Midwest and Fox College Sports (FCS), which has a national distribution of 55 million homes.

Fireworks nights: BJ Alan/Phantom Fireworks will hold fireworks shows following YSU home games against Butler (Sept. 11) and Central Connecticut State (Sept. 18). Both games kick off at 6 p.m. and are part of the September $5 ticket promotion. The fireworks will be shot from Elm Street in the area between the tennis courts and the WATTS. Some pedestrian restrictions following the game along the back of the east stands toward Elm St., will be enforced.

Monday Night Football: Coach Eric Wolford and the Penguins will usher in the first full-contact practice of the fall with a special “Monday Night Football” practice on Aug. 9. The Penguins will be in pads for the first time that evening. The event will feature the “Oklahoma Drill” followed by a scrimmage at Stambaugh Stadium.
