Ohio Hugo Boss plant celebrates first suit

Monday, July 19, 2010

BROOKLYN, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Sen. Sherrod Brown will celebrate the first suit off the line at a Hugo Boss plant, after the German company reached an agreement to keep the plant open.

Hugo Boss had planned to close the men’s suit manufacturing plant in suburban Cleveland by April, but reached an agreement with union workers earlier this year.

The Strickland administration had urged executives at Permira Holdings Ltd. — the investment company that owns Hugo Boss — to bargain or risk the Ohio investment business it does with the pension fund. Strickland and Brown will stop by the plant on on Monday.

The plan to close the plant drew attention from actor and activist Danny Glover, who met with workers and asked Hollywood not to wear Hugo Boss suits to the Oscars.
