Submit information on services for Lent

The Vindicator’s Religion page will run a listing of area services that are open to the public in observance of Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Other information on Lenten programs also should be submitted.

The deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. Feb. 10. The list will be published Feb. 13.

YAMS’ event

CANTON —All Catholics in their 20s and 30s, single or married, are invited to meet and pray with other young adults at the Young Adult Mass and Social (YAMS) at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in St. John the Baptist Church, 627 McKinley Ave. N.W.

The Rev. Ron Klingler, pastor of St. John, will lead the liturgical celebration.

A Mardi Gras-style celebration will follow at the Canton Knights of Columbus Hall, 601 Cleveland Ave. N.W. Food and beverages will be provided, along with pool, game tables, and a big-screen TV.

The free event is sponsored by Stark County T.G.I.F. young adult ministry and the Diocese of Youngstown Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

YAMS helps young adults connect or reconnect with the church and meet peers who have the same values.

Young adults can also connect with each other and find resources via the “DOY-YAM” group on Facebook.

Gospel concert series

CORTLAND — Calvary Bible Church, 2878 Warren-Meadville Road, will sponsor a Gospel concert series.

The first event will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 7 and feature Sonship Quartet, a southern Gospel quartet from Franklin, Ohio.

A nursery will be provided and love offering taken.

Mass for champs

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mass and lunch celebrating the state football championships of Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools is planned Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and Hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel.

Bishop George V. Murry will celebrate Mass at noon.

A luncheon will follow at the church hall.

Morning seminars

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Villa Maria Spirituality and Education Center will continue its monthly series of morning seminars with “Divine Chocolate and Fair Trade” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Presenter will be Yasmin Flor.

Program participants may stay for lunch but registration is required.

Cost for the program is $7. Cost for the program and lunch is $13.70.

First Friday Club

BOARDMAN — The Most Reverend George V. Murry, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, will be the featured speaker for the First Friday Club event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Antone’s Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St.

Bishop Murry’s topic will be “Catholic Immigration to the U.S. 1830-1920.”

Rosary cenacle

YOUNGSTOWN —The Shrine of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted, 517 S. Belle Vista Ave., and Queen of the Holy Rosary Prayer Group will have a rosary cenacle at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the shrine.

Mission program

YOUNGSTOWN — Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., will host a mission program at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, where the Rev. Harold Logan is pastor.

Ordination service

YOUNGSTOWN — An ordination service for John Banks is scheduled at 4 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave.

The message will be given by the Rev. Albert Ross Sr., pastor of New Grace Missionary Baptist Church.

VBS workshops

At Living Word

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The Rev. John Kowalczyk will speak at services at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at Living Word Church, 1109 E. State St. He is the founder and director of Isaiah 61 Ministry Center, Waterford, Pa.

Retreat planned

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Sister Nancy Sylvester, founder and president of the Institute for Communal Contemplation and Dialogue, will present, “Engaging Impasse: Circles of Contemplation and Dialogue” from March 14-20 at Villa Maria Spirituality and Education Center.

Participants will enter into experiential processes rooted in communal contemplation and dialogue which invite personal transformation within this communal setting

Sister Nancy is a former vice president of her congregation, the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Monroe, Mich., and a former researcher, lobbyist and national coordinator of NETWORK, a national Catholic social justice lobby.

The cost is $775, which includes all meals and lodging.

Prayer breakfast

GIRARD — Hospice of the Valley will sponsor a prayer breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Mahoning Country Club.

Guest speaker will be Gloria Thomas Anderson, author of “The African American Ethical and Spiritual Guide to End of Life Care.”

The event will also address the continuing disparities of health-care outcomes for blacks who have a negative impact on the well-being of communities.
