Middle School grapplers defeat Glenwood Middle

Coach Steve DeMaiolo is pleased with the performance of Canfield Middle School’s wrestlers in the defeat of Boardman Glenwood 55-33.

Jeff Shaffer at 80 pounds and Cameron Tareshawty at 128 pounds recorded pins for their matches, both are seventh-graders. Kyle Hido, an eighth-grader at 86 pounds, wrestled a great match and ended up scoring a major decision for his team.

Curtis Brown won the Uniontown Lake tournament Jan. 16 and ended this dual match in a close overtime win.

Coach Demailo looks forward to a strong performance at the EOWL conference tournament at the end of the season.

Cardinal hockey team trying to find rhythm

Through 17 games, the Canfield Cardinal varsity hockey team is 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League.

Riley Emery, forward and assistant captain, leads the team in goals with 16. He also leads the team in total scoring with 19 points.

Scott Sittig, forward and captain, leads the team in assists with nine. He has scored seven goals, bringing his point total to 16.

Joe Geiser has scored 11 goals, and added seven assists, with a point total of 18.

Bryan Clark, Nick Carney and Kyle Bassett have all contributed with five assists. Clark also added three goals.

Roger Geiser, goalie, has 509 saves this season, giving him an average of 86.6% saves per game.

Cris Vouvalis, goalie, has 107 saves, with 27 goals allowed.

The team has 47 goals, 56 assists, and 102 points so far this season.

Canfield senior wrestlers sweep Boardman

Canfield seniors led the Cardinals to a solid victory over the Boardman Spartans 36-22.

The match-up of the two schools is always exciting and this year was no disappointment to fans.

Leading off the senior dominance was Leo Daprile at 135 pounds. Daprile’s technical expertise, fast action and patience enabled him to beat his opponent in a 3-2 hard fought battle.

Drake Gray’s match at 171 pounds was particularly exciting. During the entire match, Gray’s opponent appeared to have the edge. However, Gray never gave up and was relentless as he pursued his opponent. With less than 30 seconds remaining and down 5-6 Gray was able to score a takedown making him the victor, 7-6.

Mark Douglas, wrestling at 215, made his win look easy. His aggressive attack and strength enabled him to pin his Spartan opponent in the first period.

Ethan Olson (112), Robby Reed (125), Alex Benedict (130), Lucas Daprile (140), PJ Hido (145) and Mark Mirto (160) also had wins.

St. Michael’s Parish basketball hosting brunch

The fifth- and sixth-grade basketball teams at St. Michael’s Parish in Canfield are hosting a brunch on Feb. 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Michael Parish Center.

The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for youth. The menu is scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, pancakes, coffee, tea and juice.

Annual Super Bowl party at St. Michael’s planned

The Canfield Athletic Boosters will host its annual Super Bowl party on Feb. 7 at St. Michael’s Family Life Center with doors opening at 4 p.m.

Ticket prices for the event will be $100 and for an additional $25, a second person may be added to your ticket. Two people max per ticket.

Each ticket entitles the person(s) to one block on the pool, buffet dinner, halftime snacks and beverages. There will be a new number each quarter, mini-boards and more.

Payouts each quarter will be $1,000 and $1,500 for final score.

Canfield Baseball Club signups end Feb. 15

The Canfield Baseball Club is accepting registrations for the Spring 2010 baseball and softball seasons.

Registration is online only at www.canfieldbaseball.com. No walk-in registrations or mail-ins accepted. Deadline is Feb. 15, 2010.
