Blue Jackets 3, Predators 2

COLUMBUS — Steve Mason made 29 saves and Derick Brassard, Kristian Huselius and Fredrik Modin scored goals to lead Columbus. The Predators, who lost their fourth in a row, had gone 22-2-2 against the Blue Jackets since the start of the 2006-2007 season, including wins in the previous five meetings. The Blue Jackets built a 3-0 lead with two third-period goals and then held on after Martin Erat and Patric Hornqvist countered with goals for the Predators. Mason, playing in his 100th NHL game, made several big stops down the stretch, including a save on Hornqvist’s redirect in the final minute.

Capitals 7, Islanders 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Alex Ovechkin was held in check, but Alexander Semin scored twice for the Washington Capitals, who netted four goals in the first period and surged to their seventh straight win. Semin had two unassisted goals, and Brendan Morrison and Mike Knuble also scored against Dwayne Roloson in the first period for the NHL’s most potent offense. Washington recorded only 12 shots in the frame but carried a 4-1 lead into the second.

Senators 3, Devils 0

OTTAWA — Brian Elliott earned his third shutout, Alex Kovalev, Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza scored, and Ottawa extended its winning streak to seven games. Elliott, named the NHL’s First Star of the Week on Monday, made 24 saves to win his fifth straight start. It was his fourth career shutout.

Thrashers 2, Ducks 1

ATLANTA — Maxim Afinogenov ended Atlanta’s power-play drought with a third-period goal. Johan Hedberg stopped 34 shots for Atlanta.Colby Armstrong gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead early in the second period with his follow after Jonas Hiller stopped shots by Evander Kane and Ron Hainsey. Steve Eminger’s goal with 2:02 remaining in the second tied the game.

Kings 5, Leafs 3

TORONTO — Dustin Brown assisted on all three of the Kings’ second-period goals and Jonathan Quick made 25 saves. Jonas Gustavsson made 28 saves and Niklas Hagman scored twice for the Maple leafs, who lost their fourth straight.

Coyotes 5, Red Wings 4

DETROIT — Shane Doan’s goal 3:50 into overtime capped Phoenix’s comeback from a two-goal deficit.

With goalie Ilya Bryzgalov off, Phoenix got goals from Ed Jovanovski and Keith Yandle in the last 1:30 to tie it at 4. Doan also had three assists, Yandle scored twice and Scottie Upshall had a goal and an assist. Bryzgalov stopped 33 shots. Nicklas Lidstrom scored twice, Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist and Patrick Eaves also scored for Detroit. Henrik Zetterberg had two assists and Jimmy Howard made 32 saves.

Panthers 2, Canadiens 1

SUNRISE, Fla. — Shawn Matthias scored twice in the third period to lift Florida. Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens. Tomas Vokoun, who was making his 13th consecutive start for Florida, made 16 saves, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots for Montreal. Voukon entered Wednesday’s game having stopped a total of 66 shots in his last two home games, both shutouts. Halak, meanwhile, made 32 saves against the New York Rangers on Saturday to earn his third shutout of the season.
