Child, 9, dies after accidental shooting


FREDONIA, Pa. — A boy has died after he was accidentally shot during a hunting trip.

The 9-year-old child died Tuesday evening at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, according to Pennsylvania State Police. His name could not be confirmed Tuesday evening.

Police said Tuesday that a rifle was accidentally discharged, shooting the boy in the head around 10 p.m. Monday while he was raccoon-hunting with his family near Bower Road in Delaware Township, Mercer County.

He was taken to UPMC Horizon-Greenville Campus Hospital, then transported to Pittsburgh for treatment, according to police.

The Allegheny County Coroner’s office is handling the case, according to the Mercer County Coroner’s office.
