No. 5 Michigan St. 57, Michigan 56

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Kalin Lucas made a go-ahead jumper with 3.5 seconds left, lifting No. 5 Michigan State. DeShawn Sims had shot roll off the rim on an alley-oop pass with 0.9 seconds left for the Wolverines.The Spartans (18-3, 8-0 Big Ten) have won their first eight conference games for the first time in school history and have beaten their rival for 17th time in 20 meetings.

Michigan (10-10, 3-5) has lost three straight games for the second time this season and have to end the season with a remarkable run to earn a second straight at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after starting the season ranked 15th. Sims scored 19 and Manny Harris, who didn’t start after serving a one-game suspension, had 16 points. Raymar Morgan had 20 points, Lucas scored 12 while Durrell Summers and Draymond Green each had 10. Michigan led by as much as seven in the first half and was ahead 27-25 at halftime.

Minnesota 65, Northwestern 61

MINNEAPOLIS — Blake Hoffarber hit four 3-pointers in the final seven-plus minutes, finishing with 20 points and lifting Minnesota. Lawrence Westbrook pitched in 18 points and six assists for the Gophers (13-7, 4-4 Big Ten), who broke a three-game losing streak. John Shurna led the second-half comeback for the Wildcats (14-6, 3-5) with 19 points and Michael Thompson added 15 points and six assists. Hoffarber, the conference’s leading 3-point shooter, combined for only 15 points in his last three games and went 2-for-11 from behind the arc. But he got going again just when the Gophers needed him the most. Hoffarber gave Minnesota the lead for good with just under five minutes to go at 51-49 with a 3, then hit another one on the next possession.

Kent State 69, Toledo 49

TOLEDO — Justin Greene and Tyree Evans scored 14 points each to lead Kent State. The Golden Flashes (13-7, 4-2 Mid-American Conference) shot 50 percent from the field (26-for-52) and hit eight 3-pointers to win their third consecutive game. Kent State outrebounded Toledo, which has lost 11 straight games, 31-21. Jake Barnett scored 15 points to lead Toledo.

Ball State 65, Miami (Ohio) 59, 2 OT

MUNCIE, Ind. — Jarrod Jones had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ball State to a double-overtime victory. Jauwan Scaife scored 11 points for the Cardinals (9-9, 3-3 Mid-American). His three-point play with 44 seconds left in the second extra period put Ball State ahead to stay at 61-58.

Jones’ layup tied the game at 48 with 18 seconds left in regulation. Terrence Watson’s three-point play with 1:26 left in the first overtime made it 54-all. Julian Mavunga led the RedHawks (6-13, 3-3) with 14 points. Nick Winbush added 10 points and Antonio Ballard had 11 rebounds for Miami.

Miami led 44-35 with nine minutes remaining, but Ball State held the RedHawks to four points the rest of the half and eventually forced overtime.
